Ima be real with you. This milkshake is the love of my life. And I have so many things to say about it…and it’s late…but we’re going to power through because this deliciousness deserves a worthy post. LET’S DO THIS.
First of all…”Chonana”? You are probably thinking “Why is this crazy lady making up weird words?” I shall tell you…I cannot take credit for the invention of this word. When I was in college, there was this restaurant called Troy’s. It was Seth and I’s all time, all time, all time fave. We named our dog Boone after our college town, and we just about named our cat Troy to continue with our college theme. That is how much we loved this place.
Anyway, they had really BOSS milkshakes. My favorite was their Chonana Milkshake. Basically it was a frosty cup of chocolate and banana deliciousness. Chocolate + banana = chonana. Get it? Get it???
So that’s where the name came from.
Second of all – when I was growing up, we drank a lot of milkshakes. Milkshakes were our thang. My fave was……can you guess….? Chocolate and banana! I don’t even like bananas very much – they are probably my least favorite fruit. But for some reason, when you blend chocolate and bananas into a milkshake, it just tastes like heaven. SO GOOD.
Now, in my world, there was no possible way to ever create a healthy version of this perfect dessert. I mean…come on…it’s a milkshake. BUT, I’m telling you guys…this healthy milkshake is out of this world. I have literally drank it for breakfast every. single. morning. since the middle of February.
Imagine this…you wake up the morning, it’s early, you want to be sleeping, you don’t really feel like going to work, BUT you get to have a huge, cold cup of this absolutely heavenly milkshake. I’m not exaggerating when I say I literally go to bed excited to drink this in the morning. Is that sad? It’s a little sad. My life is so food-centric. Don’t judge me.
So, what makes this milkshake so fantastically healthy? Shakeology. Let me preface something…I am making no money or receiving any incentive to post this recipe. So I’m not doing this because Shakeology wants me to. It’s totally independent. If you’ve never heard of Shakeology, it is basically a superfood/protein powder that you drink as a meal replacement.
It comes with your 21 Day Fix package when you order that, but you can also buy it independently. ONE SCOOP of this magic powder is the nutrient equivalent of:
- 1 bowl of exotic fruit
- 4 cups raw broccoli
- 7 whole carrots
- 10 cups cauliflower
- 3 cups romaine lettuce
- 4 cups raw mushrooms
- 3 raw onions
- 1 cup peas
- 4 cups red radishes
- 4 cups non-fat yogurt
- 1 shot wheatgrass
All that goodness along with antioxidants, probiotics, protein, phytonutrients, and digestive enzymes.
AND IT TASTES AWESOME. How. Why. What sorcery is this. I don’t even know, but I am absolutely obsessed with it. It fills you up, it kills food cravings (especially chocolate cravings…..me), and it makes your mornings awesome.
For a while, I just drank it shaken up with almond milk, but this peanut butter chonana version is SO much better. It’s like the epitome of THE MOST DELICIOUS breakfast ever. It takes less than two minutes to make. You just add everything together in a blender (I have a Ninja NutriBullet, which is the best thing since sliced bread) and turn that baby on for like five seconds. Bam. Breakfast is served, ladies and gentlemen. Breakfast. Is. Served. Or lunch…or dinner…or snack.
Even if the 21 Day Fix didn’t work one bit (which it does), it would have still been worth it JUST for the discovery of Shakeology. Can you tell I like this stuff a little bit? I doooooooooooooooo. This by no means needs to be done with the 21 Day Fix. If you just want the Shakeology but don’t want to do the 21 Day Fix in its entirety, you can buy this awesomeness separately (like I said before). Yaasssss.
????????? x 1,000,000,000.
For you 21 Day Fix people, here are your container amounts:
- 1 red container (Shakeology powder)
- 2 purple containers (banana)
- 1 teaspoon (peanut butter)
*Since you use less than 8 oz of almond milk, it is “free”*
Note: if you want to use half a banana so that you have a purple container left for fruit later in the day, go for it. I like it with the whole banana so you can taste it more, but half a banana is yummy, too!

Are you an App State alum? Because the Momma Lulu from Troys was my hubby and my favorite of all time! Cant wait to try this shake in the morning!
Yes!!! App State alum! Isn’t Troy’s the BEST?? Fun to meet another Mountaineer :).
I make a similar shake everyday and love it. I use vanilla shakeology and half a banana along with the peanut butter and to mine, I add a half tbsp of chia seeds. After blending, I let it sit for a bit and the chia seeds make it nice and thick, not quite a regular milkshake thick. When I drink it I feel like I am drinking yummy cake batter.

Sheri, the chia seeds are an absolutely BRILLIANT idea!! I need to try that for sure. Your Shakeology recipe sounds fantastic with that vanilla, banana, and peanut butter. I’m drooling over here!
Its great with the Chia seeds. I have a Blendtec so it pulverizes the seeds so it doesn’t make the shake gritty at all. I usually make it before I workout so it usually sits for about 2 hours before I actually drink it and it is so thick and yummy, almost like pudding!

Oh my gosh!! I am seriously, 100% trying that. Like…soon.
This really is a superfood smoothie. I feel healthier just looking at it!
Thanks, Dannii! It makes you feel amazing.
